Angelo Mathay is an Administrative Judge with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where he adjudicates employment discrimination claims filed by federal employees in three southeastern states. From 2021 to 2022, he served as a Trial Attorney detailed to the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, in the Immigration and Employee Rights Section. His prior work has focused on immigration law and policy, including roles with the National Immigration Law Center, Migration Policy Institute, and The Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, D.C. Before relocating to North Carolina, he was a Program Officer at the Robin Hood Foundation in New York City, where he managed grantmaking portfolios in immigration legal services and food security. Angelo currently serves on the North Carolina Human Relations Commission (Chair, Fair Housing Committee) and the North Carolina Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and previously served on the American Bar Association Commission on Immigration. He also teaches a course on Administrative Law at North Carolina State University’s School of Public and International Affairs and will teach Public Law at Wake Forest University’s School of Professional Studies in the summer of 2025. His teaching is conducted in his personal capacity. In addition, he served as a Blume Leader in Residence at Georgetown Law, where he advised, mentored, and taught Blume Scholars and other students committed to public interest law. Angelo was recognized with the American Bar Association’s “On the Rise – Top 40 Young Lawyers” Award in 2023, was named to the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association’s “40 Under 40” list in 2024, and was selected for the Filipino Young Leaders Program in 2022. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Juris Doctorate from UCLA School of Law, with a specialization in Public Interest Law and Policy. During his spare time, he likes to explore new restaurants in the Triangle area and hike in western North Carolina with his partner and rescue pup.
