SPS Student Spotlight: Meet Shetaria Shuff, Advocate for Inclusive Education
Shetaria Shuff began her career in education working for individuals with disabilities.
“That experience ignited a passion within me for inclusive education and advocacy,” she recalled.
What started out as a job set her on her current path, which led her to pursue certification and become a teacher in 2021. This gave her the opportunity to step into her current role as the Exceptional Children Lead for the Adaptive Curriculum at Guilford County Schools, where she supports students with significant cognitive disabilities and guides colleagues in delivering individualized instruction.
This path also led her to Wake Forest SPS and its Master of Educational Leadership program. Today, she balances school, work, and parenting as she pursues her passion to create a world where education is inclusive for everyone.
Shetaria shared with us more about her career journey, why she chose Wake Forest SPS, and how she’s making the most of her time as a student.
Wake SPS: Why did you choose the Wake SPS program?
Shetaria Shuff (SS): I chose the Wake Forest SPS program because of the school’s strong legacy and academic prestige. It also offered the flexibility I needed as a working professional and parent. It allows me to further my education without sacrificing my responsibilities to my students, school community, or my own children.
SPS: What’s a specific project or assignment in your program that you’re most proud of?
SS: I’m especially proud of the group assignments. They allowed me to collaborate with peers from diverse professional backgrounds, learn from their experiences, and build lasting relationships. The collaborative environment enriched my learning and gave me new perspectives I’ve been able to apply directly in my work.
SPS: How has your perspective on your industry or career path evolved since starting your graduate program?
SS: Since starting the program, I’ve gained more in-depth knowledge and a stronger sense of confidence in my role as an educator and leader. It also reignited my enthusiasm for learning and professional growth. I’ve been inspired to seek new opportunities to impact the field of special education.
SPS: What’s a piece of advice you’d give to a working professional considering a graduate program like yours?
SS: Don’t let the fear of balancing work and school hold you back. If you’re passionate about growth and ready to invest in yourself, the journey is absolutely worth it. A program like this not only enhances your knowledge, but also expands your network, boosts your confidence, and opens doors you may not have imagined.
